Dewi Sartika was born to a well-known Sundanese family, namely R. Rangga Somanegara and R. A. Rajapermas in Cicalengka on December 4, 1884. When he was a child, he always played the role of being a teacher after school with his friends. After his father died, he lived with his uncle. He received an education in accordance with Sundanese culture by his uncle, although he had previously received knowledge of western culture. In 1899, he moved to Bandung.
On January 16, 1904, he created a school called the School for the Wife in the Pendopo, Bandung Regency. The school was later relocated to Jalan Ciguriang and changed its name to Kaoetamaan Isteri School in 1910. In 1912, there were already nine schools scattered throughout West Java, then later developed into one school per city and district in 1920. In September 1929, the school changed its name to Raden Dewi School.
